Harriet Scott Promotion

After Harriet’s recent promotion to Geo-Environmental Engineer, we requested her thoughts on her career and future aspirations with Earth Environmental & Geotechnical (EEG).

Can you share your experience working at EEG so far? What have been some of the key highlights and challenges?

After coming in as a graduate and being completely new to the role, the ability to learn through practical experience really helped me with developing skills which are now used daily. A mixture of both office and site work means no two days are the same, and I’m constantly learning new skills, which keeps the job interesting.

Carrying out site investigations and being hands-on while working outdoors is one of the most enjoyable parts of my job and, as someone with a background in geology, working with rocks is definitely my favourite part of the job; although, I must admit that working in summer weather is a lot nicer than in the freezing winter! Site work can be varied, which means constantly thinking on your feet, which can be challenging but is satisfying when you can see the big picture.

What does being promoted to Geo-Environmental Engineer mean to you personally and professionally?

Being promoted to Geo-Environmental Engineer has given me more confidence in my own skills and capabilities. I feel like my hard work and contributions have been recognised and that I have demonstrated my capability to handle more challenging and complex tasks.

How did you feel when you found out about your promotion, and what was your initial reaction?

When I found out about my promotion, I was immediately excited and had a sense of validation for the work I had done. Starting as a graduate, it felt like my progression throughout the year was recognised and like I was taking a step up in my career which would include more responsibilities and progression as an engineer.

What new responsibilities or challenges are you looking forward to in this role, and how do you think it will help you grow?

I am looking forward to leading more complex site investigations and learning new skills and techniques. I can be quite a shy person so I think leading bigger projects and connecting/communicating with a wider range of people will really help me improve my confidence and leadership skills.

How do you see this promotion impacting your long-term career at EEG, and what are your future aspirations within the company?

This promotion feels like the start of my career and makes me feel like a valuable and respected member of EEG. I feel like my career goals are clear and transparent so I can see my progression to a more senior level within the company. I love learning new skills and gaining an understanding of more specialised areas which would make me a valuable team member and would allow me to keep-up with our ever-changing environment and industry.
