Geotechnical & Environmental Expertise in Redcar
Redcar and the wider Teesside area have a long industrial history shaped by steel production, manufacturing, chemical processing, port activity and energy generation. Previously developed sites can therefore contain made ground, buried structures and contamination associated with their former use.
Sites near the coast and Tees estuary can present additional considerations, including variable superficial deposits, shallow groundwater, flood risk and potential risks to controlled waters. Every investigation is designed around the history, location and proposed use of the site.
Our team provides geotechnical and environmental support throughout Redcar, Wilton, Marske-by-the-Sea, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Guisborough, Eston, Middlesbrough and the wider Tees Valley.
Key areas of expertise include:
- Trial Pits: A practical method of examining shallow ground conditions, made ground, existing foundations and buried obstructions. Trial pits can also provide samples for geotechnical and environmental testing.
- Rotary Drilling: Used where deeper investigation or rock coring is required. Rotary drilling can provide information for industrial developments, infrastructure projects and more complex foundation assessments.
- Soil and Groundwater Sampling: Samples can be tested to assess geotechnical properties, potential contamination and waste classification. Groundwater sampling may also be needed where historic industrial activity presents a risk to controlled waters.
- Window Sampling: A compact, low-impact investigation method suited to sites with restricted access. Window sampling can provide continuous soil profiles and allow monitoring wells to be installed where required.
- Cable Percussion Boreholes: Used to investigate deeper soils and groundwater conditions, particularly where foundation design requires information from greater depths.
- Ground Gas Monitoring: Monitoring can be undertaken where made ground, former industrial activity, landfill deposits or other potential gas sources are identified during the preliminary assessment.
Our local experience includes ground investigation work for a green hydrogen development in Redcar. The investigation assessed ground conditions, geotechnical constraints and potential contamination to inform shallow and deep foundation design.
