Earth Environmental & Geotechnical North East Office : Meet the Team Angela Baird
Angela joined Earth Environmental and Geotechnical as an Associate Director in April 2021 based in the North East Office. To date Angela has been providing geotechnical, mining, geological and environmental services to clients across the UK.
“My first project for EEG was a complicated and sensitive one. A landslide impacting on the garden of a residential property, with some potential signs of movement in the house too. It required a thorough phase 1 desk study and site walkover to look for evidence of potential causes, as well as some real sensitivity working with the client. It will be interesting to see what happens with this site going forward.”
Angela is a Chartered Geologist and Scientist, a Scrutineer for the Geological Society and has a BSc (Hons) from The University of Sunderland and a MSc in Engineering Geology from The University of Newcastle. Angela brings with her a wide range of experience, having worked in the Engineering Geology/Geotechnical fields for 20 years, working on projects including tunnelling, highways, residential housing, basement impact assessments, commercial developments and landslip investigations.
As Associate Director at Earth Environmental & Geotechnical North East Office, Angela will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of clients and some challenging geotechnical and environmental issues, such as the regeneration of its urban former industrial and chemical centres, a high concentration of coal authority development high risk areas, an extensive catalogue of abandoned mines, numerous mine entries, coal outcrops, past (and some current) surface mining and more. During her career Angela has experience of working on a range of project types from high profile and large projects to small and complex sites including: HS2, National Grid Cable Tunnels, Thames Tideway, Olympics Aquatic Centre, Aone/Aone+ Geotechnical Asset Inspections and slope stability investigations, large scale residential developments, hidden railway shafts, historical coal mining and MOD land.
As well as extensive work on Desk studies, ground investigation, site investigation, foundation and remediation design and a very interesting project involving the supervision for a hidden shaft of an active railway in a residential garden!
Angela was the Geodata Manager for HS2. Projects included: Production of Geo Data Management Plan, working closely with GI Team, Quality Management and GIS Teams to manage data flow. Also Deputy Team Leader.
National Grid Tunnels
As Geotechnical Manager Angela was the liaison between design team and client for design of shafts and cable tunnels project within London. Role included management and collaboration of geotechnical, hydrogeological and contamination specialists to enable design and safe construction of shafts, adits and tunnel alignments. Checked Geotechnical Design Notes including interpretation of parameters.
Working under high pressure and strict deadlines due to accelerated construction programme.
The 2012 Olympics Development
Angela worked on the Olympics Aquatics Centre as a Verification Engineer. Duties included segregation of potentially contaminated soils based on type. Tracking and requesting appropriate material/soil sampling and geotechnical testing from stockpiles and placed material. Verifying geotechnical properties and suitability of use. Daily reporting of any issues.
As a Geotechnical Manager working with part of the managing agent for the Highways Agency (Aone and Aone+) Angela worked on a wide variety of Highways projects. These included identification and management of schemes for geotechnical investigations and remediation, working to the required geotechnical certification procedures, checking and guiding third parties using S278 and S61 agreements through the geotechnical certification procedures on behalf of the HA, working to the procedures required by Aone+ and the HA to ensure works are planned and conducted with minimal risk and disturbance to the highways network and the public.
Angela is passionate about improving links between industry and education and raising awareness of the importance of geoenvironmental and geotechnical aspects in civil engineering, which she has an opportunity to do as a part-time HE lecturer at a local college.
