Rotary Drilling after Coal Mining Risk assessment

Geotechnical Risk Assessments for The West Midlands.

The West Midlands has a rich history of intensive industrial and economic growth. These areas were significantly important in the Industrial Revolution and have a rich industrial heritage. This area has been of historical importance for its mineral resources, especially coal and coal mining shaped the area. Although coal is not mined today, deep coal remains beneath much of the central and north-western parts of the region. Significant regions of The Midlands are in a Coal Mining Reporting Area so development land, brownfield land or Properties could be near to past mining activities so may be at risk of being on unstable ground or at risk from coal mine gas. You can check if your property needs a Mining Report here

At Earth Environmental & Geotechnical we offer an online service for your Coal mining risk assessment and coal mine gas risk assessment which is quick, easy and cost effective.
Mining Risk Assessments for The Midlands

The North Staffordshire, South Staffordshire and Warwickshire Coalfields were the major ones in the region although it also includes the southernmost part of the Nottinghamshire Coalfield. There are several small oil and gas fields in the region. Surrounding these shales, sandstones and mudstones are Triassic aged rocks which comprise red mudstones and sandstones.

Rock salt has also been mined or extracted as brines from the north-western part of the region for many years, and cavities in salt are also now of interest for gas storage. There has been a long history of salt production from the south of the region around Droitwich Spa. The areas where concentrations of deep exploration boreholes need to be considered and included in risk assessments for development.

Areas of The Midlands

The East Midlands includes the historic and geographic counties of Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and Rutland. The West Midlands comprises Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, and Worcestershire. The West Midlands and East Midlands are terms for the division of the Midlands as a whole.
