Earth Environmental & Geotechnical’s recently opened southern office is generating a lot of interest and has exceeded expectations by over 50% in the first month of trading.
Secured contracts at this early stage have included Phase I desk studies from a range of new clients across the south east (Southern Office), site investigations on residential development sites, a high level remediation strategy review to support a legal dispute and a strategic technical review of a former gasworks site for residential redevelopment.
Colin Buchanan, Director, stated: “Our presence in the south east is certainly generating a lot of interest with existing and new clients. Our approach of providing responsive, commercially-focused advice by highly experienced consultants along with cost-competitive fixed price basic surveys and site investigations is proving popular with our commercial, public sector and domestic clients.”
Colin Buchanan has joined the rapidly expanding Earth Environmental & Geotechnical Ltd business based in Stockport, establishing a new southern regional office in Wokingham, Berkshire. Earth Environmental & Geotechnical performed varied environmental risk assessments.
Colin comes with over 24 years’ experience in the environmental sector specialising in the contaminated land investigation, site remediation, environmental risk and liability, impact management and pollution control.
Colin brings significant experience both in the environmental consulting and remediation contracting market, having worked with clients from the energy, industrial, development, construction, legal, property and financial sectors.
Adam Czarnecki, Managing Director, said: “It is an exciting time in the growth of the business and the time is right to open an office in the south east of England to service and develop our local client base. Colin brings a wealth of experience to the business and we are very pleased to welcome him to the Earth team.”
Colin said: “I have known Adam for over 10 years and monitored Earth’s development with interest since its inception last year. Adam and Liz have founded the business on sound business principles with an attractive market offering and I am excited to join the business at this exciting stage in its development.”
As a result of our busy workload we have recently engaged Jayne Carrick to assist with our expansion plans. Jayne is a very experienced environmental, remediation and sustainability specialist and is currently involved in a number of pre-acquisition geoenvironmental studies, site investigations, sustainability reports and wind farm projects.
One of our Company Directors (EARTH ENVIRONMENTAL & GEOTECHNICAL LTD), Liz Czarnecki, is going to be taking part in the upcoming BUPA Great Manchester 10K Run, in the hopes of raising money (Donation) for the charity BrainTrust. She’s running as part of a 40 strong team, in support of a family from her children’s school, who tragically lost their little boy Lucas to a brain tumour. It is the family’s hope that the money raised will help other children in Lucas’ position to have an extended and higher quality of life in the future.

We have completed our first year of trading and it has been a very rewarding experience for us all.
Our clients have brought us a wide range of problems to solve, with existing land uses including; cemeteries, bridges, chemical works, gas works and canals, each with their own particular challenges and academic interest.
It is that time of year when you start to reflect on the year gone by and prepare budgets for the following year.
2013 was a good year for all of us at Earth Environmental & Geotechnical. We secured a large number of contracts (200 in total), which took us to all parts of England, Scotland and Wales.
Pierce, the Blackburn-based business advisory and accountancy group, has been chosen to support a recently established business in its ambitious growth plans. Earth Environmental & Geotechnical, headquartered in Stockport and with an office in Somerset, carries out surveys for the property, financial, chemical, legal, mining and construction industries.
The business is managed by Adam Czarnecki, a former Blackburn resident, and was founded to provide bespoke, cost effective and pragmatic solutions to clients.
Pierce group was brought on board by Adam to support the business as it was established, providing tax advice, and to plan for future growth.
Adam said: “It’s an exciting time to be establishing a new business after a painful recession and we are seeing real signs of improvement. So far business has been excellent with numerous orders from all parts of the UK”.
“We are planning steady growth over coming years and look to Pierce to support us in our strategy.”
Gary Speak, associate director at Pierce, said: “Adam and his team have vast experience in the sector, and bring real value to their clients. With our knowledge of the construction industry, Pierce will be able to offer valuable support to the business.”
NOTES TO EDITORS:
Pierce is an award-winning business advisory and accountancy group, employing nearly 80 staff in Blackburn.
It has a number of specialist teams including audit and accountancy; corporate finance; taxation; business consultancy; family business; forensic accountancy, construction industries, and small business support. It was founded in 1929.
The summer months have been a busy time for us with no real sign of a downturn of work during the holiday season. Some very interesting contracts have been recently awarded and have involved us travelling to many parts of England, Wales and Scotland.
The contract wins reflect our enviable professional reputation, multidisciplinary approach and core skills in geology, geotechnical engineering and contaminated land assessments.
Notable recent contract wins include;
Pre-purchase due-diligence assessment of existing information in relation to solvent (PCE) contaminated site on active industrial estate in Berwick-Upon-Tweed. The site is contaminated due to historical waste water handling practice and a spillage in the early 1990’s. Despite implementation of a programme of Soil Vapour Extraction and continued groundwater pumping there is clear evidence of ongoing contamination issues. The next phase of work will involve a site investigation and technical assistance to Environmental Lawyer (ELM Law) who are co-ordinating the exchange of contracts.
A Validation Report in relation to Ground Gas Mitigation measures implemented at an industrial unit has been approved by the local authority. The unit is located on an infilled clay pit, adjacent to a gassing former domestic waste landfill.
A future phase of work will involve drilling of boreholes, use of downhole in-situ infra-red gas analysers and flame ionisation detector monitoring within adjacent building units.
The company was instructed to provide a Quarries Regulations Geotechnical Assessment and Audit of quarry workings on a site in Norfolk. The work involved of an appraisal of health and safety issues, working practices on the site with recommendations in relation to sidewall stability of recent deep working areas.
A quick turnaround was required for a due-diligence survey of a site prior to acquisition. The site located in an industrial estate is a vehicle repairing centre and has been in use for over 50years. Potential liabilities discovered during the audit included a gasoline tank, which demanded an assessment of potential soil and groundwater contamination. The work was procured through Pannone Solicitors in Manchester and was completed within three working days of receipt of the instruction.
A recent instruction has involved us supporting a national consultancy practice with environmental monitoring and groundwater sampling on a very large site investigation project in London. The work will entail us working on the project for a few months.
A local authority procured us to provide a Basic Phase I Desk Study as part of a pre-purchase survey of the site. The site is located on part of a former paper mill and is used as a car-parking area. The study flagged up a number of development constraints including infilled canal basins, flooding areas, presence of a groundwater abstraction borehole on site and the presence of weak alluvium.
Future work will involve a site investigation for pile design and examination of any relict structures associated with the former paper mill and canal basins.
We have been working closely with several remediation and demolition contractors assisting them with tender appraisals and providing technical support services during site works.
Work is about to commence on a site near Wigan where our advice has been provided to give the client a competitive advantage during the tendering phase. The landowner, faced a large expense to remediate a greenfield site that contained a peripheral screening bund that is contaminated with elevated metals. Several contractors were approached and delivered solutions involving the removal of materials to a hazardous waste facility.
We recognised that the material presented a human health risk and recommended the development of a Materials Management Plan to demonstrate suitability of use in another part of the site that was going to be used for an open space end use. This negated the export of material to a landfill facility.
Earth Environmental & Geotechnical have recently secured a number of contracts involving Phase I Desk Studies, Site Investigations, development of remedial strategies and supervising remediation.
The fact that we are being routinely procured to assess potential new residential and commercial sites for investors and developers suggests to us that we are now moving out of a prolonged period of recession.
The work has involved us working in all parts of the British Isles with a new industrial development in Edinburgh and several new residential developments in Wigan, Devon, Cornwall, Stoke-on-Trent, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, the South East and London.
Notable recent contract wins include;
Development of Remedial Strategy and Materials Management plan for a remediation contractor on a residential site where a previous consultant advised for all made ground to be removed offsite as Hazardous Waste. Our staff developed a strategy involving retention of materials on site within a landscaping area beneath a cover system.
Site investigation and ground gas assessment for new residential site previously assessed by a consultant as requiring deep boreholes to assess ground gas regime and use of piled foundations. Our geotechnical knowledge and pragmatic environmental monitoring strategy established that shallow foundations could be adopted without the need for ground gas mitigation measures. The report was submitted to the local authority and relevant conditions discharged within two working days.
Development of Phase I Desk Study and Mining Risk Assessment for redevelopment of former community hall for a residential end use.
A Phase I Desk Study commissioned for a large national developer has thrown up a few interesting development constraints on a greenfield site. The site is located outside of the Cheshire Brine Subsidence Board Consultation area; however a forensic assessment of historical geological maps, geological memoirs together with aerial geomorphological mapping has shown that a proportion of the site has suffered subsidence in the past 1850-1960’s due to brine pumping.
Future work will involve acquisition of satellite data to assess ground movements over a ten year period and site investigations for foundation design purposes.
Negotiations of planning conditions associated with industrial unit developed adjacent to a highly gassing landfill facility. A future phase of work will involve drilling of boreholes, use of downhole in-situ infra-red gas analysers and flame ionisation detector monitoring within building units.
Development of remedial strategy for a housing site in London area, on part of a former gas manufacturing site. Previous consultants advised on use of piled foundations, 1000mm thick cover system and second phase of site investigation work to assess contaminated perched water risks to controlled waters. Our staff have developed a scheme using shallow foundations and provided a quantitative risk to controlled waters based upon existing data. A future phase of work will involve construction of a remedial strategy and validation of cover system in garden areas.
A developer faced substantial construction issues on site due to the use of a consultant that conducted a site investigation and used a commercial chemical testing laboratory without formal UKAS accreditation for several tests. As a result we negotiated with the local authority on a proposed scope of work including a Phase I Desk Study and validation of imported cover system. Our staff sourced a reliable source of topsoil and supervised the installation of a 300mm thick cover system in front and rear garden areas. A validation report was produced and accepted within three working days.
